As "The European Yarn Show", EXPOFIL, wishes to provide for the first time an economic overview of its sector at European Union level. This study, performed exclusively for EXPOFIL by the Research and Consulting Department of the French Fashion Institute (Institut Français de la Mode), started with the 1997 data. It has just been updated with the 1998 statistics.
To obtain sets of statistics that are as comprehensive and uniform as possible, and above all are comparable from one country to another, the approach adopted is that of yarn-types based on the following MFA categories :
1 : cotton yarns
22 : yarns from discontinuous synthetic fibres
23 : yarns from discontinuous artificial fibres
41 : + 125A : synthetic yarns
42 : +127A : cellulosic yarns
47 : woolen yarns
48 : worsted yarns
49 : +56 : hand-knitting yarns (included yarns package for retails sale)
115 : linen yarns
The sources used for the study are :
CITH (Brussels), as the main source
CIRFS (Brussels), for certain categories of synthetic and artificial yarns;
CTCOE (Paris), for estimates based on the figures supplied by CITH;
ITMF (Zurich), for investments
OETH (Brussels), for the number of companies and employees.
